Hayley Osborne:
Okay, so after I have just absolutely welcomed this fantastic woman with her stellar bio, I would love to personally welcome to the show Em Gee.
Em Gee:
OMG is in the house!
Hayley Osborne:
How are you? Thank you for joining me.
Em Gee:
I’m good. And thank you so much for having me. This is going to be fun, I can tell it’s gonna be fun already.
Hayley Osborne:
Yeah, it’s gonna be great. So I have told our listeners a little bit about you. But in your own words, let’s find out who the real Em Gee is.
Em Gee:
In my own words, where do I start? So the real Em Gee is sounds like a rapper, doesn’t it? I am a business and mindset coach, and I coach women in business to be unstoppable in everything that they do. And I do this through a variety of mindset strategies, mostly, but also a lot of strategy strategies. technical term, because a lot of the time when we are coming up with a strategy in our business, we’re thinking small because of the mindset shit that’s holding us back, right? So when we look at what we want to do in our business, and what we want to achieve, what I love to do is help people see how unstoppable they are and how they can achieve massive things. Despite the stories, they might be telling themselves about why they can’t do it.
So that’s what I do in a nutshell. But the real Em Gee is a bit of a closet comedian, a coffee lover, but has to be with oat milk now because apparently I’m not allowed to have cow’s milk anymore. I know very disappointing, because you know, cheese, chocolate, all of those things. But I do love coffee, my cocktail of choice is a Negroni, which according to Google means that I’m a serious drinker. But Negroni’s are sophisticated to me like, they’re very sophisticated drink. But I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m sophisticated. I’m more out of the box during like to follow the rules. The T shirt I’m wearing today says if I’m too much, go find less.
Hayley Osborne:
Love it.
Em Gee:
Yes, very extroverted, and out there sometimes in your face annoying. But that’s me.
Hayley Osborne:
I love it. And I guess like, because of what you teach, you let your personality shine through that. And I feel like that is the purpose of your business is to extract the inner crazy from people so that they can break through those mindset blocks and shift that because I guess a lot of women have role models, but there’s also a perception in society of, you know, Cinderella story, and these things are taught to us from such a young age that as we get older, that these are all things that we have to break down, especially as business owners, especially when you reach certain levels of your business, all sorts of things creep in. I guess, what’s the biggest thing that you see among the people that you teach and coach in that mindset, what’s the biggest impact on our minds over our life and our work?
Em Gee:
So the biggest impact is one thing fear. But often it’s the unawareness, if that’s a word, the unawareness, of what fears are present and how they’re driving us. And ultimately, those fears all come down to generally the fear of not belonging, we worry what other people think of us and this can show up in ways like, for example, we can have a fear of success because we think well, what will happen to my group of friends and my family will they disown me, because I’ve become successful, and then I no longer fit within that box, because no one else in my family is in this entrepreneur realm at the moment. And that all comes back to that needing to belong, but we don’t realise that unless we are able to uncover what those fears are. So that’s, that’s one of those really deep rooted fears that a lot of us have, that can also show up with money as well. And going well, I don’t want to want more money, because I’ve been told by my peers that that selfish and I don’t want to appear like I’m selfish, because then people won’t like me. And I don’t believe that money is important, when really money is power. And it just allows us to be more of ourselves. And so that can show up in that way. And then we don’t make money in our business, because we actually fear making money underneath it all.
And even taking action can sometimes we have that fear of failure. That’s a huge one, you know, the fear of failure. I don’t want to take action, not because I’m afraid of failing, but i’m afraid of how it will feel to fail. And that can then get tied up with the other fear of what other people think, well, if other people see me fail, what will they think of me, and they’ll know that I’m not good enough, and all of that. So it all comes down to those deep in a human fears that are then when we step into the space of being an entrepreneur, there’s like a big light shining on them, you know, we’ve got torches shining on all them, because we’re trying to level up. But those things will come up if we don’t deal with them at that unconscious level and recognising what there are, what there is, underneath all of the reasons why we’re not doing what we could be doing in our business.
Hayley Osborne:
And also, like for a lot of people listening, they’re probably thinking, Oh, that’s a little bit woowoo, or that’s a little bit like, bah, bah, bah. But can I just say, I probably had those thoughts as well, as a first year business owner, but then as you, next level different devil the these things actually crop up. And if you kind of haven’t dealt with them, early on, these can be really implicating to going from just earning six figures to mid to then like pushing seven figures, like, I know that a few people in business will say what got you here won’t get you there. And this what you teach about having an unstoppable mindset is a huge part of that. Massive. So in terms of the money, the money mindset for women, I think that’s a pretty big deal. And it shouldn’t be these days, because, you know, men and women, we both kind of well, in my opinion, we pull the same weight, like working women with young children and like men domesticated and everyone’s doing their thing, but money mindset, what are the biggest, I guess, like money blocks that you see most women having these days?
Em Gee:
Oh, my goodness, there’s so many. And I think the thing is like, even though yes, we’re in 2022, and things should be different. And we you know, we have come a long way, especially since like the 1960s, a lot of things have changed. And it’s funny when I think of the 1960s Oh, I still think of 40 years ago and like actually, it’s like 60 years ago now. Shit. What happened? Where did the time go? But a lot has changed. And really still 60 years is such a small amount of time if you think about the human race, but let’s just like go to the whoo for a second here. Generational trauma filters through you know, it’s only a few generations ago that there was the Great Depression. And even though in this lifetime, in your lifetime, you haven’t experienced the things that they experienced back then firsthand, you still get passed down those stories. And whether you believe in the whoo or not where you are, everyone’s on the whoo scale somewhere. Some people are way over here, and some people are way down there. I’m somewhere in the middle.
Although, I think maybe I’m further towards the whoo than I realised. And then you just talk to more people in that space and you’re like, oh, maybe it’s just the people I’m around and I’m actually really whoo. The point of my message was that you we know that regardless of where you are on the whoo spectrum, our parents stories shape our reality if we’re not aware of it. Well, even we’re not aware of it when we’re a kid. So, of course, the parents that we had, who did grow up in the 60s, they were given the messages from their parents that women don’t make money. And that men need to be the breadwinner, and that talking about money is not okay. And wanting more money is selfish, and money is the root of all evil, I think all of them actually come down to money is the root of all evil. Because we think that it’s bad, you know, like, we shouldn’t want more money, because that makes us a bad person. And then that kind of triggers off a whole lot of other things. And so then, when it comes to wanting to make more money in our business, we will always find if we believe that we will always find a reason why we shouldn’t. And therefore we take action, or we don’t take action that leads us to not making as much money is what we could win instead, the way I choose to look at money now is that money equals impact.
And the more money I have, the more impact I’m making. I’ll tell you what, when I’m making a million dollars a year, which I plan on by 2025, I’ll be spending 75% of that. Now, that’s not spending on fucking Gucci. Part of it will be tax, absolutely. But I’m going to be spending it on employing people, I’m going to be spending it on businesses that I want to support on political parties that I want to support. And it creates power. And there is actually research and evidence to show that women spend so much more on charity than what men do. We need more women, millionaires and billionaires in order to change the world. And I know that goes up really high level, but I’m not here for mediocre I’m here to make fucking big changes in the world. And if I do the work that I love, and then I generate an income, I can support the things that fit within my values that will hopefully change the world.
Hayley Osborne:
My God, I love you, Em Gee. There needs to be more people like you on this world. And saying that you have a book. Tell like crazy. You have your own podcast, you have so many courses and ways in which people can work with you. And just, you know getting a taste of you. Obviously on my podcast. You are like a vibe. There is a very high magnetism around you. Firstly, let’s talk about your book. Tell me about your book. It came out this year.
Em Gee:
It came out December the 27th. Because I committed one of the things I talk about is unstoppable ownership, like when you make a decision, you own it. So, in July last year, I was like, I will release my book by the end of the year. And yeah, so December 27, I got it out just by the end of the year. And became an Amazon number one bestseller within 16 hours. So yes, very exciting. It’s called uncertain to unstoppable. And it’s a personal development book. So while it’s not a business book, it is if you aren’t doing personal development, when you’re in business, you’re limiting your business growth, full stop, end of story. So, it’s really a story about my life. But with a lot of lessons and a lot of activities to do. So it’s not just a sit down read from front to back book. It’s a book that has activities at the end of each chapter around different themes. So for example, we talked about the fear of failure. There’s a whole chapter on that. And at the end of that chapter, there’s some activities to do if you’ve got that fear, and it’s holding you back. And that way you might read it and go, Oh, I don’t need that right now. But in future when I’m like, Holy shit, I’m not doing anything because I’m so afraid. I’m going to screw it up. Come back to that chapter go. Okay, these are the questions I need to ask myself. This is how I can shift that energy in my body. So that’s kind of the book it is. It’s very easy to consume. I didn’t put fluff in it. Like I hate books that I’m like, get to the point. I don’t have time for 200 pages of fluff. I want to know like, just tell me how to do the thing now.
Hayley Osborne:
I have the same yeah, especially when you’ve got other things going on. You’ve got your business, but then you have your children. You have like a life outside of work outside of your children, you know, so it’s like yeah, get to the point. I want to do the thing if someone said there was a 60 page booklet on how to do something versus a one pager I would still pay the same amount of money for the one pager
Em Gee:
I know more like yes oh my because she can tell me how to do that in one page, you’re saving me time. So I’ll pay you more money.
Hayley Osborne:
That that kind of leads me on really nicely into the next question. So you’ve got, all of these pillars and all of this awesomeness that you’ve built into your business, and you teach a lot of other amazing women on how to be unstoppable. Did you have a mentor getting started? Did you buy a course? Like, how did you get a feel for at all?
Em Gee:
I have always had a mentor or coach always, in some capacity. So right now I’ve got two. One of them is business. One of them is mindset, just personal because I’ve realised I need to get back to that as well, you know, at this upleveling point in my life, need some more of that mindset work for myself. But way back in the day, when I first started my business, Grace Leader who a lot of people will know. Now more as her brand The Doers Way she had kind of just started up and she had this inner circle. And I’m very fortunate that because it wasn’t really early days for her, but she was only a few years in, I got to be amongst that goodness at quite a high level. In the early days when she was teaching about online courses. I was probably in there. I was, what’s the analogy? Flying oh my god, I’m going to destroy it. So I’m just not even going to try and say it
Hayley Osborne:
With your eyes closed? Is that the kind of thing that you want to say? Flying blindly with something like that?
Em Gee:
Yeah, yep, that’s right. Let’s roll with that do that. Basically, I wasn’t ready to be level, but I went for that level anyway. And I would consider that to be how I have become more successful by working with mentors, or coaches, I have gone okay, that feels a bit far ahead from where I am. So I’m going to join that container. Because then I’m going to step into that level. Now previously, I was a classroom teacher. And this was my theory in teaching as well was, instead of teaching to the middle of the class, I’m going to teach to the upper half of the class, because those kids will, they’ll actually lift up to the expectation.
So if I have high expectations of those children, for example, I would the rest of them actually level up with some support for those that are at that lower level as well, right. But if I’m going into that container and thinking, Okay, I’m going to step up and be at that point, which is what I’ve done with Tina Tower. Now I’m in her Empress circle, which some of the women in that group, I’m just like, holy shit, like, look at what they’re doing. But because I’m in that group, I’m stepping up, what do they say? I’ve got it. I’ve got an analogy. Your net worth is only as good as your network.
Hayley Osborne:
Like vice versa. Your network is your net worth or determines your net worth.Yeah, I do agree with that a lot. And, I try and obviously do that in my own business as well. And I’ve only been in business a shorter time than you. But I’ve had, like mentors in and out along the way, all the way along the way. And I know that every time that I have my business upscales every single time it is so powerful. Okay, so you are very authentic in your social media. At what point did you decide? Fuck it. I will appear as my authentic self. And in that I want you to talk about Em Gee the superhero.
Em Gee:
Mrs. Unstoppable is my superhero avatar. Let’s go back though, because there’s kind of a reason why I am more authentic on social media now than what I used to be. And I guess I’ve always been comfortable with social media, because I was an early adopter of socials, as you know, the MySpace era way back in 2007maybe I was on MySpace. I was meeting friends on MySpace for everyone else thought I was a total weirdo, a total geek, a total nerd. And I was like, but I make such good friends on MySpace. And from there, I’ve become good at using social media. But it wasn’t until midway through 2020 that some things shifted for me personally, that helped me to realise it was okay not to be liked by everyone. And I think that was the biggest mental shift because it’s not just about strategy to show up authentically. It’s not a strategy problem. It’s a confidence problem or It’s not a problem at all, it’s just working on your confidence. And if you don’t have confidence, it’s courage to start with. And I guess I had to also become okay in that year with who I am. And being able to be authentically me, actually helps me determine who I am. And writing my book was a good part of that process last year as well, I’ve got to like, work through my own my own experiences and do a lot of healing in that process.
So I think the reason I’m able to do that is because I’ve constantly been working on the inner world, and being okay with my inner self and being okay with not being liked by everyone. Then this year, a whole other thing happened, I had an actually quite shift experience with someone who no longer wanted to work with me because our values didn’t match. And I gave her a refund, because, I saw that the values didn’t match. And I just said, look, I can see that this is not going to work any longer. And that’s okay, let’s move on. But it was shit. I’ve never had to do that before. And it really upset me. But I know it happened for a reason. And that reason was because because our values didn’t match, I didn’t feel that I could show up authentically, and it was actually filtering through to my socials, because I was thinking she’s gonna watch this, she’s gonna be like, This is my coach. I don’t agree with their values, blah, blah, blah. So she set me free by actually voicing her concerns. And I’m grateful for that now. And from then I just was like, this wave came over me I was like, right, I am fully 100% me now. And that was when I was launching my programme, the Unstoppables. And part of that was superhero, Mrs. Unstoppable, which has really become a huge part of my brand, because it took off. Surprise, surprise. And basically what it was, was me brainstorming and I love doing this just kind of like sitting down in the sun, like I’m seeing out in the sun right now and going, what would make this stand out?
Because I know there is a shit tone of coaches out there. If you’re in the market for a coach, your feed is probably flooded with it. So how can I stop the scroll and have fun because fun is one of my business values and my life values. Like if it’s not fun, I ain’t doing it. So I started creating this avatar of Mrs. Unstoppable. And she had pink hair because I quite often dye my hair pink not at the moment the pink hair, blue latex leotard, a cape, Big knee high boots, and I got someone on Fiverr to draw this cartoon. And I was like, Yeah, that’s cool. And they were showing me the drafts and I was changing the eye size and all this and it just wasn’t really lighting me up. And this is one of the things I’ve learned to ask myself is, is this a full body? Fuck yes. And if it’s not, it’s a no.
I thought this was what I wanted. And it’s not and I can’t keep going with it’s not so what am I doing. And I was working with a mentor at the time. Of course, Heidi Anderson, who is the queen of public relations marketing. And I said to myself, what would Heidi do in this situation? And Heidi’s very out there as well. It’s like Heidi would dress up as a superhero. What if I dressed up as a superhero? What would that feel like? So I got online, and I started buying all these pieces to the outfit. And it wasn’t until I actually put it on for the first time and made my own cake because I couldn’t find the right thing. And I’m not a seamstress like it was it was fun,I was learning I was doing stupid shit. And I put it together and I zipped up the boot and I was like the boots I had to boots obviously I just put on one book. I zipped up the boots and I was like, wow, this is so cool. I feel unstoppable. In this outfit, even though it’s quite risky.
Hayley Osborne:
It’s quite revealing.
Em Gee:
Like, it’s very high cut. But do you know what’s awesome about that is my own personal hang out hang ups are around my thighs. And so I’ve got my thighs out, going I’m fucking unstoppable. And it’s hilarious because at the same time, there’s this part of me going yeah, you’re hot right now. Even though there’s this part of me that hates my thighs. It’s so weird because I love it.
Healing and being unstoppable in the process of marketing. My programme The Unstoppable is in every all of my programmes now have the word unstoppable in it so missus unstoppable. Almost everywhere. And I’ve managed to use the cartoon like in some of our workbooks and stuff so that I’ve still got the little cartoon here, which is cute. But yeah, I showed up to all of my webinars in my unstoppable outfit. I’m on live like doing you know, my Instagram stories and everything during launch in that outfit. I’ve obviously had a photo shoot in it. It’s probably the photo you’re gonna use for your podcast. I did get a friend to take those photos. Because, like, literally, the crotch is so small. You had when nickers underneath.
Hayley Osborne:
And they would’ve been like ahh Em , I’m not going to take the shot yet.
Em Gee:
Yeah well, she’s so this is the same friend who also climbed up our highest mountain here in Western Australia with me, for me to take my shirt off and fly it in the wind, because I got printed on the back, take taking your coaching business to new heights to the highest mountain and flew that on a mountain.
Hayley Osborne:
That’s awesome. So I talk a lot about by not marketing yourself and your business, you’re wasting opportunities. So out of your unstoppable marketing and this container that you’ve just built, and it’s just come out. So I want to use the word organically because you built it around an avatar, and then it grew and grew and grew. And now like, it’s just into this beautiful flow of, I guess services that you offer within your business. Now, without the starting point, you wouldn’t have gotten to where you are now. Like, what is the biggest opportunity that has come out of that for you is that, you know, it can be financial as well. But I just want to know what that looks like. Because a lot of us are wasting opportunities by not marketing and putting ourselves out there. But we have no idea what they are because you don’t know what you don’t know.
Em Gee:
Oh my goodness, if you are not marketing, you are not running your business. Basically, marketing is 80% of your business. And if you don’t work at it consistently, it just won’t generate anything. But in terms of the impact that it’s had on my business. Oh my god, I can’t give you one thing because it’s been huge. So in terms of income, and I’m very money open. I have generated $136,000 from that programme in this year so far. That is almost that almost equals how much I made in 2021 alone. Right and so being able to step into that brand and that unique selling point of being Mrs. Unstoppable and following that through 100% has generated a shit tone of income. And when I say a shit tone, like that’s a shit tone for me right now, in five years time, that’ll be like, oh, yeah, whatever.
But compared to beginning of last year, I did a launch. So beginning of 2021, I did a launch. That was my first group programme. And that was $11,000. And I was so excited. I was like, Yes. And I mean, for sure. That was exciting, right? You’ve got to go through these stages. And then to be you know, 10 times that this year is like, phenomenal. So that’s a massive one. I also was asked to be on Tina Towers podcast, so that’s incredible. I didn’t even realise how big of a deal that was. I literally almost didn’t make it to the podcast interview because I had the time difference wrong. And I was at the beach when I got the little 10 minute ding. You’ve got an interview with Tina Tower in 10 minutes. And I was like, shit, I was down at the beach with a friend and just like it was pouring down with rain would run out off to get a coffee and sit like had and had to run to my car message to her and be like I’m so sorry. I had the time wrong, rocked up soaking wet. And then nailed it.
I didn’t mention that story in there. But I mean, I was blasted as hell and I still know that was so proud of got so many followers from that podcast interview. So many people messaged me afterwards to say how inspirational it was. So that was brilliant as well. And opportunities, I don’t know if I’m allowed to announce this one. I’ve just had another opportunity come in today.
Hayley Osborne:
We can safely say to the listeners if you want to know about, if you want to stalk Em, how do we do that? Because I would love you to tell our listeners how they can connect with you and stalk you so that they can see and your light shine bright and cheer you on as well.
Em Gee:
Yes, please do. And please do connect with me because connection is my highest value. So on Instagram is the place to connect with me my company name, so business name and handle is @bethinkdocoaching. And that’s the best way to connect with me and find out more information, go check out my Instagram stories. I’m very active in there. And I love sharing just you know snippets of my life and wins. And I also have a free Facebook group which every Friday I jump in, and I share my Friday biz lessons. So I basically pull back the curtain on what I’m doing in my business and things that I’m learning and also highly entertaining like today.
Hayley Osborne:
So good. And also, obviously the listeners are listening on a podcast platform at the moment with their either phones or laptops in their hands. Once this episode is finished, you have a podcast too. So that might be a really good opportunity, for discovery. If they are not following you already. What is your podcast
Em Gee:
conversations with the real Em Gee.
Hayley Osborne:
I love it. And on that note, I think we will sum up there on a high. And I just want to say thank you so much for joining me. This conversation has been absolutely epic, fun, funny, like very inspiring, very insightful. And like I wish you so much success in your business for the future.
Em Gee:
Thank you so much, Hayley. Thanks for having me. It has been fun.
