What is a social media strategy?

July 22, 2024

More importantly, why do businesses need one? It’s simple: there are billions of customers on social media every single day and if your business is taking this key marketing tool with a pinch of salt, then it’s time you strategically capitalised on it.

The key ingredient for doing social media well is to have a strategy.

It starts with understanding your goals, reviewing the market, then creating strategies to engage your audience.

After implementing, it’s important to test, measure and adjust for the next plan.

Ideally a social media strategy should be completed twice per year and have measurable objectives, so you know how your content is performing. Putting measurable objectives around your social media starts with understanding your overall business objectives, followed by your social media objectives and lastly and most importantly outlining the measurable social media objectives so you have those numbers to monitor each week. Doing things “just because it feels good” is not a good enough reason anymore on social media. There are so many people doing what you do, the competition is huge, so how do you differentiate yourself as a business within these platforms? You create a standout social media strategy that’s a cut above the rest.

Simply being active on social media isn’t enough; you need a well-defined social media strategy to guide your efforts. But what does that really mean, and how can you create an effective strategy that drives results? Let’s break it down.

Key Elements of a Social Media Strategy

1. Audience Engagement

Understanding and engaging your audience is crucial. When you know who your audience are, you can tailor your content directly to their interests and preferences. A detailed profile of your ideal customer is the best place to start.

It doesn’t make assumptions or categorize people into groups. It focuses on one person and outlines everything about them. It helps you tell your brand story. It does not specifically mean you are targeting that one person; however, it helps you align your message and take your customers on your brands journey.

2. Content Pillars

By establishing content pillars within your business you will always have strategic pillars to fall back on and revert to, therefore your messaging will be streamlined as opposed to crazy sounding.

3. Content Calendar

A comprehensive content calendar is the backbone of any successful social media strategy. It allows you to plan your posts in advance, ensuring consistency in your messaging and branding.

4. Platform Selection

Not all social media platforms are created equal, and it’s essential to select the ones that best align with your business goals and audience. Consider researching where your audience spends time. Focus on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or TikTok based on your target market.

Don’t spread yourself too thin, it’s far better to excel on a few platforms than to stretch your resources too thin across many.

A solid social media strategy is more than just a collection of posts where you sell your services across these platforms, it’s a structured approach helping you connect with your audience, enhance brand visibility, and ultimately drive business growth.

If you’re ready to elevate your social media game, let’s keep it real and be honest:

You know social media is the largest marketing tool on the planet. So, how will you feel when you have your social media all planned out?

What will you do when you have new potential clients coming through your social media?

What will you do with your extra time now you have a strategy for your social media sorted?

Are you excited at the thought of understanding what works for your business on your social media?

By creating a social media strategy, you can expect to:

Have a tailor-made masterplan to follow and revert back to as a reference guide

specifically, for you.

Increased engagement and visibility

Have the confidence to show up

Increase your profile visits, followers, shares, comments and likes
