And like I said an awesome Superhero Marketing member. She’s sharing her story on how she is planning more and working less because of it. She’s living the life she loves travelling Australia and growing her team to take on more so she can work less how awesome Lynda is proof that with a little planning, kick ass marketing and hard work anything is possible. She shares how showing up gave her the confidence to show up even more.

Even when she thought she couldn’t do it. Lynda has been working her butt off honestly she really has to get her entire marketing footprint to where it is now to function without her touching it. Because of this her business has grown changed and evolve to allow her to live the life of travel. Lynda is literally walking the path most of us dream of when it comes to business. So without further ado, let’s get into the episode.

Hi, Lynda and welcome to the podcast. Oh my gosh, I am so excited and happy to have you join me today. Thank you.

Lynda Daish:

No worries Hayley, how are you?

Hayley Osborne:

I’m good, how you going? But let’s just start first from scratch before we say how are you going? I want you to tell everybody listening, who you are and what you do.

Lynda Daish:

I have a bookkeeping business called LD Business Solutions. I love helping businesses, small businesses get clarity around their numbers. And making it real, not just like, hello, here’s the numbers, but what do they mean? Keeping it simple. And as my byline is it’s bookkeeping without the bullshit,

Hayley Osborne:

I’m glad you said that. Because I was going to add that in if you didn’t. You are fierce with bookkeeping without the bullshit, to preface this Lynda is my bookkeeper. She does a fabulous job. She is onto it every month, she makes my life so much easier. But as well the reason that I asked Lynda to come on the podcast as a guest today, which I would have said in the intro, but Lynda is also a part of Superhero Marketing, my membership. So there’s lots of things that we do together on both sides. And I just couldn’t wait to have you on the podcast. You’re amazing. So give us an intro about what you’re currently doing in your business. So, day to day you help people with business owners with their bookkeeping, tell us where you’re based, paint the picture.

Lynda Daish:

Okay, so I’m based on the Fleurieu, I live at Victor Harbor, however, have set myself up so that I can work from wherever I’ve got a team of four, we all work from home. And I’ve just come back from six weeks of working the whole time while travelling up the New South Wales coast in our motor home. So that was quite the experience. Also, I have a really good team. And they knew that I wasn’t going to be as accessible maybe. And they just stepped up and took over, which was all that I dreamed it would be. I’m probably still working too much so the goal will be four or five hours a day, with the team doing the majority of the work.

Hayley Osborne:

That’s amazing. That’s lifestyle the though. That’s risky and uncomfortable. But what happens when you get to the other side, it feels pretty good.

Lynda Daish:

So right now, all I’m trying to do is do that for one day a week.  And then once I know that I’m gonna work on it and just gradually progress towards achieving that. Hopefully that’ll be in a year, we’ll see.

Hayley Osborne:

That’s so good. Well, I can safely say that you’ve made my life so much easier when it comes to that sort of thing, all the bookkeeping, without the bullshit, because, you know the way I operate, lots of people know this, it’s pretty black and white. There’s no grey area. And that’s something that I think is one of the most important things in business is knowing your numbers and your bookkeeping, and making sure that you’re submitting all the things when you need to bookkeeping is a lot more than just reconciling your zero.

And it’s important that you as business owners stay in your zone of genius, and that’s why I got you to help me because, I think that that’s not my zone of genius. I know how to do it. But why would I when I can concentrate on marketing, which takes me to your marketing, and your marketing seem to continue while you were away for six weeks. Great segue, so why did you invest in Superhero Marketing?

Lynda Daish:

Well, I knew it was something that was important, mostly because the way I run things is not just I don’t want to just be someone that’s working from home my main value is connection. So unless I’m constantly busy putting all my clients all the time, which is impossible. And I do try and do it regularly, but that’s another way of being able to connect. And you have sort of taught me that it’s about showing actually who I am authentically. And sort of getting over the fear of showing up, I’ve still got to probably show my face a little bit more. But just working through that and showing authentically who I am and making the connection with my clients and hopefully future clients.

Hayley Osborne:

And I think now I see the way your website is, I see the way your socials are. And you think that now everything is a bit more aligned with your value, your vision and your mission, that it makes it easier for you to show up.

Lynda Daish:

Totally just having a strategy. And knowing sort of my language, or the way that I communicate, instead of trying to just do what you think people want or you think it should be. It’s rather just you know, you’ve encouraged me to just put it out there in the day to day, the way I would normally when I’m talking to someone.

Hayley Osborne:

And it feels more calm and comfortable. And even the way I saw you online before we met, I already know you because you’re the same person as you are online. And I think that’s really important. And that’s probably the message of when you’re marketing as a business owner is don’t try and be someone you’re not otherwise eventually it will fall over.

Lynda Daish:

Yeah, and it just doesn’t feel right. I’m getting too old to be fake about anything. This is what feels right. This is who I am. So if you want to work with me, then you need to see who I really am.

Hayley Osborne:

What are your biggest fears about marketing? You know, showing your face showing up getting it wrong. Everyone fears maybe not being liked. But I kind of feel like as you get older, you don’t really care about that as much.

Lynda Daish:

I think the hardest thing for me was actually showing my face. Some people were really good at it. And others I know struggle with the same thing to show up to have your face there it’s confronting for you.

Hayley Osborne:

Would you say that after you’ve practised quite a bit now, would you say that it’s become a lot easier?

Lynda Daish:

Absolutely. And that’s what I think that’s the biggest thing he taught me and just gotta keep doing it. And then it becomes comfortable. I’m not saying it doesn’t still feel awkward. It’s still weird. But I look back at the stuff I’ve done and gone you know what, it’s okay. I mean does anyone really love seeing their face? No. I do look back and go, I’m comfortable with that. I don’t look like too much of a dork. And that’s who I am sorry.

Hayley Osborne:

And I feel like people relate to you a lot more when you get to that comfortable point. It’s a lot easier to get people in your corner. And you never know, I always say there are people out there that and I’m not just talking about social media, there are people out there that would have landed on your website and gone are maybe not right now. They’ve gone over to socials, oh she looks cool. They receive emails from you reminders that you send out, but eventually, it might not be now but you know, a few months down the track, something happens and it clicks or they realise something and you’re their person, you know, and that’s the reason why we do marketing. So what do you think would you say would be your biggest like, Aha, moment when it comes to putting yourself and your business out there? What’s that light bulb moment for you?

Lynda Daish:

I think it was just you kind of pushing me to just be authentic and it’s okay. That’s probably the biggest aha, it’s actually okay to put your face out there. I need to put my face out there because I get it. I look at other people’s social media. And I think if I see the face and I see the person, it’s a much better connection than some, you know pretty Canvas template or something. I think that realisation and awareness, that’s probably the biggest aha.

Hayley Osborne:

Do you wish you’d done it sooner?

Lynda Daish:

Probably I wasn’t ready. I needed the support and I needed to be talked through the processes. Like you say, bookkeeping might not be your zone of genius, and neither is social marketing mine. So, you know, segue that into, that’s why I need your support.

Hayley Osborne:

That’s right. But also, you’ve got your staff now you’ve got all of that, your business is going really well. But I feel like this is the time where you could essentially take your foot off, because you’re like, rah, I’ve got to that place where, but then what happens something unpredicted kind of happens. And then everyone’s like, right, I need to start marketing again, that’s not the way, the way is to be consistent and show up. What does that look like? You can’t just do it out of panic. It has to be more strategic. So you’re kind of providing, variety, the education, the inspiration to your audience.

Lynda Daish:

I think you’re right ,when I first started, I went well, I’ve got a whole heap of clients. I don’t think I want any more. So why do it that was probably a big thing for me. But then as I built my team, and I have more capacity, then, I had the ability to take on more clients. And then if I hadn’t been showing up all that time, and you just start would have been a bit weird.

Hayley Osborne:

How do you grow? How do you scale? How do you build? You can’t compare your one to someone else’s 20. But that 20 thought had to start somewhere.

Lynda Daish:

But even to the point that your social media actually still keeps you connected with your current clients and also keeps little reminders, you’ve asked us to have your pages super those kinds of things. It really seems to be that more the way that people you know, even connecting with your current clients.

Hayley Osborne:

Yeah, that’s right. And just to paint another lovely picture, Lynda’s background right now in her office. You’re the bookkeeper. But I could label you the plant lady. Because you have the most adorable plants in the background right now of your backdrop which your office is mad crazy. I love it. Lynda Daish:

ld_business_soulutions. Yeah. And I have an amazing client.

Hayley Osborne:

That’s what I was gonna say that was where I was going with that. So you tell the story.

Lynda Daish:

So one of my clients has an amazing plant store down here in Victor Harbour called Charlie and Jack. So check her out. And she also has one of the biggest plant followings on Facebook as the crazy indoor plant people Australia.

Hayley Osborne:

What you see through I guess putting yourself out there is you building your own little community, so by going there, and now, she’s your client, you’re her client, I’m your client, you’re my client, and the community. But that’s what like community does, it builds you, it grows you and I guess as well, the way I see, inside the membership, what’s happening, it’s lovely. It’s so nice. And I see everyone supporting each other online. And it’s a beautiful little community that’s building and I feel like down the track, when these services of each other come up, obviously that’s the go to that’s the exchange, which is lovely.

Lynda Daish:

Absolutely. And it all comes back to just connection.

Hayley Osborne:

Yeah, connection and storytelling. And that I think is the biggest objectives with your marketing those two. So, gone are the days and I teach this inside the membership. You know, selling on social media is like throwing water balloons at a porcupine. That’s not my quote, but it’s it couldn’t be further from the truth and you can’t do that anymore. It is about connection. It is about storytelling and you do have to be authentic. Otherwise, people can sniff bullshit my way. What would be the number one thing that you’re most proud of when it comes to your marketing?

Lynda Daish:

I’m pretty proud of my consistency, I’m posting consistently, well I think I am maybe not as consistent as you might like me to be. But I just set myself a challenge to, you know, do X amount per week. And, and that’s been okay. And also planning it out and knowing. I’ve got three weeks of content, basically setting it up so that when an idea comes, you just quickly put it down. And you’ve got it all there.

Hayley Osborne:

Yeah, that’s awesome. What would be your number one piece of advice that you’d give business owners right now?

Lynda Daish:

About bookkeeping or marketing?

Hayley Osborne:

Yeah, let’s do both.

Lynda Daish:

Bookkeeping, I would definitely say I see it time and time again, if you have a really good support team, you’re set. Check out my Instagram, see what I’m talking about some talking about that this week. But it’s about having someone who can sort of be beside you as you go through your business, but the over the finance stuff, because you’re out there being an awesome marketing guru, or you being an amazing cafe owner, or you own an incredible venue or whatever, you’re great at that. So get other people to support you who are good in the areas that aren’t your strengths, or that you’re not really interested in. Famous me like I get you because my strength is not marketing. So I need to go to someone who can be walking beside me as I go through this.

Hayley Osborne:

I remember the breaking point for me. Before I reached out to you was spending a Saturday night out remember, it was about six hours of me, I know of me going through my bookkeeping, just going through the motions of everything. I probably had six pages of have zero reconciliations to go through I know. And then there was like, the other submissions to do. And I just thought to myself, wow it’s Saturday night, what am I doing, I could be spending time with my family. I’m here, obviously, my little ones were asleep. But I’m here doing this. I don’t need to be. And I know that with marketing, for example, you can spend, five hours as well, plus trying to teach yourself how to do something. Why wouldn’t you shorten your learning curve by getting someone to help you with that? That’s just it’s the same kind of thing.

Lynda Daish:

Yeah, exactly. Get the person who knows what they’re talking about to walk beside you. It’s just being able to reach out to someone, we’ve got all the modules with the learning, but you’ve also got other people that you can talk to about it and go, you know, how do I do this? How do I put this video on to my Instagram or you know, those things that are just like blowing my mind? And you’re like, Here, do this?

Hayley Osborne:

I find that you know, that it, it’s definitely like provided a forum to ask silly questions that you have no one to ask. And I love that. When I built this, I didn’t think that would be a factor. That should always go on the sales page. It’s a forum to, ask the silly questions that you are too afraid to put on your social media stories or whatever. How does everyone do this? So how do you do that? So yeah, that’s, I think that’s a good thing that’s come out of it.

Lynda Daish:

And it’s the same with bookkeeping, like I’d say to my clients, there’s no silly like, they go oh, I probably should know this. I might well, not necessarily. And they go Oh, I feel really silly about this. I’m like, No, how are you supposed to know this stuff? That’s my thing. And I get it, but no question is silly there either.

Hayley Osborne:

What’s the next biggest thing that’s happening in your business?

Lynda Daish:

Next biggest thing is another team member.

Hayley Osborne:

Really? Well done, that’s awesome.

Lynda Daish:

And me work so that then I can get to those four hours a day. So I can still travel. I’ve travelled now, but definitely that six weeks, I ended up working too much. So that’s got to change before we go again.

Hayley Osborne:

That’s awesome. Well, I have absolutely loved watching you grow. I love being by your side. I love helping you. And I love that what you bring to the little community that we’re building.
